Vegas Virgin

Confetti makes me crazy!

Confetti makes me crazy!

I am a late bloomer in every aspect of the phrase.  And last weekend I lost my Vegas Virginity.  I went to Vegas for the first time for my annual medical convention.  I am 32 and have spent the first 31 years in school or intense training of some sort.  On the off times in medical school I was usually curled up under my mom aka safety blanket or remediating Biochemistry or neuroanatomy.  I never did the crazy weekends in South Beach at 23 years old or the trip to Paris during a cool magazine internship that I watched the fun kids do on MTV.

Confetti makes me crazy!

But this time it was on!  I booked my stay at the Cosmopolitan and shopped my closet for my brightest mini-dresses that have been buried deep down in the plastic bins for so long.  I thought about my upcoming trip and how luxurious I’d feel in my swanky hotel and pondered the notion that I could possibly be surrounded by a bunch of lame doctors.  It happened in Clearwater!  So lame is not the crowd you want to be in when you’re packing your sequined kimono jacket for Vegas nights.   Now granted I know some surgeons and Derms that know how to kick it hard, but some of my fellow FP docs really need to do better.  So I invited my girlfriends to meet me and enjoy my hotel while I was attending conference.  And by night, we would turn up in Vegas.  Boy did we turn up.  It was Delores’ birthday so too many reasons not to act a fool.

* Disclaimer: I DO NOT recommend that anyone attending a medical or any work-related conference do what I did*

I slept two hours a night.  And surprisingly I was not tired at all.  I was so excited to be there that I was running on cortisol.  It was Conference by day, parties by night.  Throw in fancy dinner reservations and awesome shows.  Oh and on our last day together, my friends and I went to the Marquee Day pool party.  Now I am a New Yorker and have been to the best of the best clubs in my day.  I have to say that Vegas is worth all the hype.  No matter your age, you will have a good time.  If you see me dancing on a table then that place gets two thumbs up.  You must, however, have the essential ingredients in order to have the time of your life in Las Vegas.   (Friends with a VIP table don’t hurt either.) Take Note.

  1. Good company. Bring friends that are down for whatever. (“whatever” is subjective).  If she wants to go ride the gondolas at the Venetian than you must go.  If he wants to eat s’mores at 2am then find that room service menu for him.  (And Sian, I would have gone to see Boys to Men with you if I didn’t budget to see only Cirque.)  It makes the experience so much sweeter when your company indulges in the small things that bring you pleasure.

2. Appropriate Clothing. Not just any ‘ol party duds.  Pick out the pieces that make you feel like a million bucks, Like a super model, Or video vixen.  It doesn’t matter.  Whichever ideal you find most attractive, emulate it.  It’s Vegas! You can never be too over-the-top.  Feathers, sequins, leather, silk, mini, dramatically long, sheer…it’s all good!  Do not bring super-cute heels that hurt your feet.  It would be a shame to ruin that sexy outfit by taking off the killer heels and dancing barefoot on the sticky floors of TAO.  Bring a light jacket, sexy swimwear, nice cover-up, and sunglasses.  On the topic of swimwear, Vegas is that place you can wear heels at the pool.  Haven’t you ever walked around your house in your bikini and stilettos and told the mirror how fine you were?  Oh, that’s just me? Okay, well whatever.  I’m just saying, if you ever envisioned yourself in this, Vegas is the place to wear it.  Trust an believe there will be a gang of people bringing their A-game.  If you think it’s too much, it’s probably not.  With the exception of Delores’ spider horns.

3. Confidence.  There’s nothing more attractive.  And feeling attractive naturally leads to a good time.  If you are feeling insecure about anything, swallow that, wash it down with some Veuve Cliquot and party on.DSC07886

4. Good intentions. Come with an open mind and ready to have a good time.  If you think that going to Vegas in your 30’s is too desperate, stay home.

Many people go for the gambling, to visit the Hoover Dam, or to get pampered at luxurious spas.  I did not partake in the those things.  My advice is for those whose intentions of going to Las Vegas are to stay on the strip and have fun with friends.

I love Las Vegas.  My trip was too short.  I will definitely be back.  I’ll stop talking now and let my pics do the rest of the talking.
